Consuming Images

This ad for Gucci shows a gender bias and attempts to demonstrate that a woman's "place" in the world is at a man's feet and right below his....uh..PENIS.  Not only is she on the ground but is also on her knees, in the dirt, with one hand on his shoe and the other pulling down her tiny dress to cover her private zone.  The man's face is not pictured but it shows him without a shirt to so that he can show off his chiseled chest and abs.  Gucci has been known for their ads portraying sex appeal with hopes that it makes people think that if they dress like this they will attract good looking people.

This is one of my all-time favorite photos.  I love it because it is simple yet it is conveying a very strong message and gives "flower power" a whole new meaning.  This photo was taken by a journalist in the 60s while the Vietnam war was going on and these young adults are protesting the war while having several rifles pointed at them.  It is a powerful photo that still shares the message that war is not the answer.  

Toxic Sludge 3/5/17

         For this week's blog, we were asked to find a political proposition or some sort of legislation that has been recently proposed.  I began to investigate and came across the Ohio Drug Price Relief Act.  Similar to California's Prop 61 which was on the ballot this last November, this initiative was created to lower the costs of prescription drugs in the state of Ohio to the same prices that the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) pays.  This act is currently pending but has been supported entirely by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation who has donated $540,000, according to followthemoney.org.  Michael Weinstein, the President of the AIDS Healthcare Foundations. strongly believes that this must come to an end.  The cost of these speciality medications, especially those used to treat HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, and cancers are rapidly increasing and hurting everyone except for the drugmakers and pharmaceutical companies.  Good news is, there have been no reported opposing campaigns (yet) so hopefully this Act will come to life after the November 2017 ballot and put an end to these outrageous prices forever.
